Senior safety conference
A free conference on issues of safety and security for senior citizens will be held May 29, noon to 6 p.m., and May 30, noon to 4 p.m., at Highland Baptist Church, 3100 S.W. Highland Ave. Topics include exercising the mind to keep it healthy, financial security in crisis, taking care of the caregiver, planning ahead for end of life issues, identity theft and a demonstration by the Redmond Fire Department on avoiding fire and fall hazards in the home. Fireworks fund
The Redmond Chamber of Commerce is hosting a bottle and can drive May 30 to raise money for the annual Fourth of July fireworks show. Bottles and cans can be delivered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Ray’s Food Place, 900 S.W. 23rd St. There will also be 50 cent hotdogs and $1 root beer floats. All proceeds will go to fund the 2009 fireworks show. As of May 26, donations reached $1,190. Approximately $7,000 is needed to host this year’s fireworks show. Donations in any amount can be delivered to the Redmond Chamber of Commerce & CVB, Redmond City Hall or the Redmond City Hall Annex by June 15. Community garden space
Free roto-tilled garden plots will be available June 1 at St. Alban’s Community Garden in northwest Redmond. The 10-foot by 12-foot plots are watered three times weekly. Past gardeners have grown harvests of beans, carrots, potatoes and other vegetables.

Shootout in the Badlands
The Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association will host a Western style shooting competition June 12-14, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., each day, at the OSSA shooting range 24 miles east of Bend on Highway 20. Youth writing competetion
The Nature of Words, Central Oregon’s premier literary organization, has extended the submission date for its Rising Star Creative Writing Competition to June 30. The competition is awarded at the annual literary festival scheduled for Nov. 4-8.
