The History of Redmond

"History is a novel for which the people is the author"
Alfred de Vigny

It's been nearly 25 years since a book dedicated to Redmond-area history has been published. This month Images of America: Redmond was released, created from the archives of the Redmond Spokesman as well as photos and stories from its readers.

The book was created to celebrate two serendipitous events: the centennial of Redmond as an incorporated city (in July 2010) and 100 years of publication for the Spokesman (also July 2010).

The pictorial history begins even before Redmond was officially a town, with photos of early Redmond culled from the collection of the Redmond Historical Commission and Spokesman news accounts from the era.

It goes on to highlight the forces that shaped Redmond: the railroad, irrigation, agriculture and ranching, the airport and fairgrounds, businesses and civic affairs, education, social life, and of course - its people.

Images of America: Redmond is available at area bookstores, at the Spokesman office in downtown Redmond, online at http://www.amazon.com/ or http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/, and at select retail outlets in Redmond. A companion set of postcards is also available for purchase.
