Support RHS cheerleaders
The Redmond High School Cheerleaders are raising funds for their upcoming seasons.
On May 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., they will hold a yard sale in the front parking lot of Redmond High, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts will also be for sale. On May 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. a car wash will be held at Jody’s Drive Inn. Get your car washed and enjoy a slider for $1.

Special Olympics fundraiser
A can and bottle drive will be held in support of the local Special Olympics team May 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ray’s Food Place in Bend, Redmond, LaPine, Prineville and Sisters.

Learn to run/walk for fitness

Summer lunch program offered
Redmond kids (18 years of age and under) will be able to receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch at no charge this summer.
The Redmond School District is participating in the Summer Food Service Program, and meals will be served at three locations around the community: Sam Johnson Park, Redmond Boys & Girls Club and Terrebonne Boys & Girls Club. No registration is required.

Food preservation classes
Freezing the extras from your favorite farmer, your own garden’s bounty, or preparing food for quick preparation or ready-to-eat meals can be easy and rewarding. Learn the principles of high-quality freezing and how to enjoy some of your favorite foods year-round by practicing safe preparation of foods at a hands-on workshop led by OSU Extension Master Food Preserver Bonnie Koenig.
The class will be held Tuesday, May 24, at the OSU Deschutes County Extension office at the fairgrounds in Redmond, from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost of the workshop is $15. The registration fee includes products made in the lab and how-to booklets. Class size is limited and the deadline for registration is May 20. Grief camp fundraiser planned
A benefit dinner will be held Tuesday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. for Camp Sunrise, a program of Redmond-Sisters Hospice. This free camp program takes place each year for children ages 7 through 14. This year’s camp is the weekend of June 17-19.
The dinner will be held at Terrebonne Depot, 400 N.E. Smith Rock Way. $35 includes tip. Entertainment by CinderBlue. For more information or reservations, call 541-548-7483 and ask for Buffy.

Writing camps planned for kids
Building on last year’s Weekend of Words, The Nature of Words (NOW) will conduct three WOW! Week of Words summer writing camps for kids this July.
Taught by NOW’s Programs Director, Jamie Houghton, and Rachel Lee-Carman, local writer and author of the “Show and Tell” zine, students will participate in workshops focusing on fiction, poetry, zine and bookmaking. Students will take home a bound copy of their work, including individual poems, prose and zines (handmade magazines).
Ages 12-14, July 11-14, 1-3 p.m., $125/student. Ages 8-11, July 20-21, 1-3 p.m., $65/student. Ages 5-7, July 18-19, 1 - 3 p.m., $65/student.

COCC offers classes for iPad users
Central Oregon Community College’s Community Learning department is offering a new two-evening class for Macintosh users titled “Get More Out of Your iPad.” Participants will explore the iPad’s many features and learn to set up their own iPad the way they want.

Suggest a name for baby porcupine
The High Desert Museum is calling on Central Oregon students from pre-school through eighth grade to help name its new baby porcupine.
The student whose suggested name is chosen will win a special visit with the baby porcupine and a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum’s wildlife areas. Students may submit names through May 30 at http://www.highdesert
museum.org/get_involved/Baby_Porcupine_Name/.
The museum will select three names from those submitted by students and invite visitors to vote for the winner with contributions dropped in ballot boxes for each name. All proceeds will support the museum’s porcupine family and the wildlife program. The winning name with the highest total donations will be announced on July 4.
Visitors can meet the baby porcupine on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 2 p.m. at the museum.

Deschutes Dog Days event scheduled
DogPAC has announced the second annual Deschutes Dog Days will be held Aug. 21, from noon to 4 p.m. in Bend’s Riverbend Park.
The event will celebrate DogPAC’s work to promote the health and enjoyment of dogs and their guardians through the provision of off-leash recreation opportunities in Central Oregon. The event will consist of a dog run, dog games, a raffle, food vendors, service vendors and retail vendors. Raffle tickets will be on sale for over 20 prizes. Games will include: Hot Dog on a Spoon, Lure Course, Crazy River Dog Fetch Contest and Timed Fetch.
