Fair entertainment lineup announced

This year’s Deschutes County Fair and Rodeo concert lineup has been announced for the free concert series held in the Hooker Creek Event Center.

The Guess Who will play Aug. 3; Clay Walker, Aug. 4; REO Speedwagon, Aug. 5; and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Aug. 6.

The fair runs Wednesday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Aug. 7. This year the free concert passes will be distributed by all participating McDonald’s restaurants in Central Oregon every Wednesday from 2 to 7 p.m. beginning July 6, while supplies last. No purchase is necessary.

Church offering summer Bible school

Vacation Bible School at Highland Baptist Church will be held June 27 through July 1 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. This year’s theme for VBS is Big Apple Adventure. While children learn about the Big Apple, New York City, and pretend to visit there, they will have fun with crafts, participate in indoor and outdoor recreation, learn new songs with movement, and study Bible stories. Snacks are provided during the morning.

VBS is for children who have completed kindergarten through those who have completed fifth grade. This year, there also will be a special celebration on Sunday, July 3, at 10:30 a.m. for children and parents to celebrate what was accomplished during the week and to recognize Independence Day in a special way.

C.O. winegrowers seminar planned

The Winegrowers Association of Central Oregon is sponsoring an educational seminar on vineyard and winery establishment in Central Oregon on June 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Presenters include Chris Hermann at Stoel Rives LLP and founding chair of Vineyard and Winery Management Group; Jeanette Morgan from the Oregon Wine Board; a representative from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission; and Nick Lelack from Deschutes County Planning Development.

This seminar will direct attention toward the continued growth of the vineyard and winery industry in Central Oregon and offer a better understanding of state and local rules and regulations that are the guidelines to be followed for the continued development and promotion of world-class sparkling and still wines in our high desert setting.

The seminar will be held at the Terrebonne Grange Hall, 8286 11th St., Terrebonne. Cost is $10 per person and includes coffee, juice, breakfast rolls and lunch.

Redmond Area Park and Recreation District and the Cascade Swim Center are sponsoring a float in the Redmond Fourth of July parade and a free day at the swim center.

The parade is at 10 a.m. in downtown Redmond. Activities will be held after the parade at the swim center, from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Admission is free.

Jean Ann Notdurft
Dec. 13, 1941 - June 12, 2011Jean Ann Notdurft of Redmond, Oregon, passed away peacefully at St. Charles Medical Center - Redmond on June 12, 2011, after a very short illness. She was 69.
Jean was born Dec. 13, 1941, in Portland, Oregon, the oldest child of Robert and Sophia (Senn) Geiger. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, graduating from Ulysses S. Grant High School in 1959. Jean attended Oregon State University where she was affiliated with Chi Omega Sorority. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1963.
She married Norman E. Notdurft in 1963, and joined him on various travels and assignments throughout the world during Norm’s 28-year career in the U.S. Air Force. Jean became interested in the education of special needs and emotionally disturbed children and received her teaching certification in 1975. It was a career change that became the love of her professional life.
Upon retiring in 1991, the couple moved to Kitsap County, Washington, where she taught in Port Orchard and was involved in quilting and serving at Family of God Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Redmond, Oregon, in 2005.
Jean is survived by her best friend and husband, Norman Notdurft; her daughter, Jill (Bryan) Waldrop of Spring, Texas; and son, Shaun Notdurft of Springfield, Oregon. Other survivors include her sister, Kay (Spiros) Karidis of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and brother, Richard Geiger of Jarrahdale, West Australia, and niece, Ruhma Geiger also of Jarrahdale, West Australia.
Per Jean’s wishes, her ashes will be disbursed in the Pacific Ocean by the Neptune Society.
Memorial contributions may be made in Jean’s memory to the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 386 N. Fir Street, PO Box 1056, Sisters, Oregon, 97756.

Robert ’Bob’ Leroy Redmond
May 24, 1942 - May 31, 2011
Robert Leroy Redmond, passed away in Redmond, on May 31, 2011.
Bob was born May 24, 1942, in Bend, to Edward and Blanche Redmond, the youngest of seven children.
He grew up in Bend, and married Marilyn Brown on September 2, 1962. They moved to Washington, where he worked for Boeing Aircraft. While there, Doug was born in 1964, and Debbie in 1966. At age seven, Debbie drowned in an accident in a neighborhood lake.
In 1975, they returned to Central Oregon. He worked for Sea Swirl Boat Company in Culver for 26 years.
Bob loved the outdoors: fishing, hunting, and hiking. He looked forward to attending church at Redmond Assembly of God. After he developed health problems, his friends and neighbors, Gordon and Mildred Severyn gave him a ride to church.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Redmond; son, Doug of Bend; brother, William of Myrtle Creek; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah; parents; three sisters; and two brothers.

Phyllis Funkhouser
Sept. 1, 1931 - June 16, 2011Phyllis passed away in Vancouver, WA, following heart surgery.
She was born in Salem, OR, to George and Nadine Rally. She married Donald Funkhouser on Sept. 9, 1947. She is survived by her husband, Donald; three children, Dale (Roberta) Funkhouser, Deloris (Don) Magnuson, and Delila (Michael) Burns; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She and Don were avid RVers for many years before moving to Terrebonne, OR, in
1976.

Kenneth Fairchild
Feb. 22, 1931-June 10, 2011
Kenneth Dwain Fairchild was born on February 22, 1931 in Enterprise, Oregon to Verdo and Olive Fairchild. He passed away peacefully on June 10, 2011 after a long struggle with emphysema. He was 80 yrs old.
Ken’s family moved to Redmond in 1941 and he graduated from Redmond Union High School in 1949. He married his high school sweetheart Suzanne “Sue” Skinner in Redmond on November 19, 1950.
They raised their family of five in Central Oregon. After Ken’s retirement from his career as a plumber and pipefitter in 1993, he and Sue moved to Enterprise.
They were active in the community and the Enterprise Christian Church. Ken enjoyed being part of a mission team that traveled to Honduras to build homes and a church. He loved playing Santa for the children in Enterprise and Sue would join him as Mrs. Claus, they were quite a team! In 1998 he was awarded the Wallowa County Unsung Hero honor for his multiple volunteer activities.
The Fairchilds returned to Central Oregon in 2003 and settled in Prineville. They became members of the Powell Butte Christian Church and Ken enjoyed attending as often as his health allowed. Ken was a
friend to many and a stranger to no one. He was generous to a fault, helping anyone in need. Ken became a Christian later in life and he shared his faith easily with others. He wanted everyone to know if God’s grace was able to save someone like him it could save anyone!
Ken is survived by his five children: Scott and Cindy Fairchild and Sharon Fairchild of British Columbia, Kristi and Bruce Dunlap and Shelley and Scott Knutz of Powell Butte and Karen Roberts of Prineville,
12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Ken is also survived by his brother Bob Fairchild of Ellensburg, WA and Bob’s five fabulous daughters. He was preceded in death by his precious wife, Suzanne
and his parents.
Ken’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Maggie King for her continuous compassion and care. The excellent Pioneer Memorial Hospice team treated Ken and his family with
kindness and dignity. God bless you all!

W. H. “Spike” Durfee
Aug. 8, 1938- June 9 2011
Spike Durfee, 72, a much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and cherished friend, slept quietly into a heavenly home on June 9, 2011, at a Cape Kiwanda resort in Pacific City, Oregon, where he and wife Mary Ann were celebrating their 53rd wedding anniversary.
A celebration of life will be held for the Crooked River Ranch resident on Saturday, June 25, at 2 p.m. in the Redmond Fire Hall, 341 N.W. Dogwood Ave. Attendees are requested to enter the hall from the north entrance.
Spike was born on Aug. 8, 1938, in Cloverdale, Ore., to William W. and Bernice (Haines) Durfee. He attended Allen grade school in Bend and Terrebonne elementary school. He graduated as an honor student from Redmond Union High School. He was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Washington which he attended for two years.
On June 7, 1958, he married Mary Ann Barrie in St. James Cathedral in Seattle. In 1962 they returned to Redmond with newborn son Barrie.
Spike became part owner of Central Oregon Pavers and later Spike Durfee Construction. He was active in the Redmond Volunteer Firemen’s organization, receiving EMT 1, and EMT 2 credentials through Central Oregon Community College. He was a pioneer in establishing the current Emergency Medical Services program and pursued a long career in the Redmond Fire Department. From 1965 to 1973 he served as
Redmond’s assistant fire chief and Central Oregon Emergency Medical Services Director.
From 1974 to 1978 he served as Director of Eastern Oregon EMS which through the State of Oregon Health Division and federal grants, implemented EMS committees and programs throughout Eastern Oregon. He served as Oregon Volunteer Ambulance Association president, and was a member of the
Oregon Fire Instructors Association.
In 1981 he became fire chief for Crooked River Ranch Rural Fire Protection District, a position he held until retirement. In retirement he loved camping, traveling, fishing, elk hunting, and being with friends and family.
Spike was a member of Redmond Elks Club, a founding member of the Crooked River Ranch Lions Club and the Crooked River Ranch Water Watch Dogs.
Spike also invested hundreds of volunteer hours from 2005 to 2010 with Lyle Calvert coordinating a history publication for the centennial of the Redmond Fire Department.
Spike is survived by wife Mary Ann of Crooked River Ranch; son Barrie, daughter-in-law, Lori, and grandchildren Brandice and Bo of Tumalo; sister Carmen ( Earle) Smith and brother Robert (Patricia) of Redmond; sister Toni (Chuck) Spencer of Moore, Idaho; brother John (Arrow) of Mackay, Idaho, and 10
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Bill” and Bernice Durfee of Redmond. Memorial contributions may be made to the Redmond Student Volunteer Firefighters Association scholarship fund, 341 NW Dogwood Ave., Redmond.
Spike’s ashes will be dispersed along Tam McArthur Rim.

Greyhound adoption fundraiser planned

Greyhounds don’t race very long, only a few years at most. When they stop winning, that’s when Greyhound Pet Adoption Northwest (GPA NW) steps in. The dogs learn how to live with a family and are adopted into homes. GPA NW is holding a special Yappy Hour at Bend Pet Express Eastside on Thursday, June 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wine and appetizers from 900 Wall will be available, and yappitizers for your dog. Registration is open for the Summer Shootout Marble Tournament, set for Saturday , at the Des Chutes Historical Museum. The event begins at 10 a.m. and features tournament play, marble free play throughout the day, lawn games, information on great summer vacation fun around the community, and other fun activities. A special exhibition game will be played by local celebrities for a chance to be crowned the

Summer Shootout Marble Tournament Champion.

New this year, marble competition will be in two categories: children ages 7 to 14 will compete for a brand new Trek bike from Sunnyside Sports, while high school students and adults can register to compete in the Young at Heart category for other great prizes. Previous marble playing experience is not necessary. A warm-up and marble “shooting” lessons will be provided prior to beginning of tournament play.

Admission to the museum will be free to all participants with the chance to win great prizes. In addition to the marble shootout, families will have the opportunity to visit additional family-friendly organizations and learn about summer kid programs around our community.

Music on the Green

Bank of the Cascades and the Redmond Chamber of Commerce & CVB have announced the Music on the Green entertainment schedule for the 2011 season. This is a free summer concert series held in Sam Johnson Park on alternate Wednesday evenings at 6-7:30 p.m. Food vendors will be available.

June 29: County Line. Together since 1985, County Line will entertain with funk and pop music from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

July 13: Brian Hanson: Country classics accompanied by his famous fiddle playing.

July 27: Notable Swing Band. Music and memories of the Big Band era.

Aug. 10: CinderBlue. Entertaining us with Americana music.

Aug. 24: 41 East. Playing ’50s through ’80s cover band favorites.

Sept. 7: The Hokulea Dancers. Redmond’s very own traditional Hawaiian dancers are always a crowd favorite.

Free concerts in Bend

The St. Charles free Summer Sunday Concerts at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend have begun.

Running most Sunday afternoons through Aug. 14, the free Summer Sunday Concerts have become a staple of the season in Central Oregon. Concerts feature world-class artists in a family, pet and picnic friendly environment. This year, each concert will be coupled with a highlight of one or more of St. Charles’ service lines to help educate the community about health options and the preventative screenings it has to offer.

Fiber and fenders event benefits shelter

The Alpaca Shearing Festival and Car Show will raise funds for the Humane Society of Redmond on Saturday, June 18.

Event activities include barbecue lunch, shearing and spinning demonstrations, live music by Cinder Blue, raffle and silent auction, bake sale, and alpaca boutique. Organizers also are expecting viewings of new baby alpacas.

Admission is free; a lunch plate costs $7.50. A donation of pet food is appreciated.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Crescent Moon Alpaca Ranch, 70397 Buckhorn Road, Terrebonne.

The car show will consist of 11 judging classes, and prizes will be awarded for first and second place at 2 p.m. A “People’s Choice,” “Crescent Moon Ranch Award” and “Humane Society of Redmond Award” will also be presented. On-grass parking is provided for all entries. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. Pre-registration costs $25 and includes admission, dash plaque, raffle ticket, voting ballot and sign for your vehicle.

Community weed pull event taking shape

The Deschutes County Weed Advisory Board and the “Let’s Pull Together” event organizers are gearing up for noxious weed pulling events that begin Saturday, June 11, during Noxious Weed Awareness Week. The week’s weed pull events help to educate in preserving Central Oregon’s ecosystem from non-native noxious weeds.

Noxious weeds are non-native invasive species that threaten our ecosystem. They not only smother growth of native plants, but they starve wildlife, use water and create allergens. Noxious weeds also can become tremendous ladder fuels that can radically change the speed and fury at which wildfires burn.

“Let’s Pull Together” is a countywide noxious weed pull event. Participants in the event include neighborhood and homeowners associations, city and county government and boards, park and school districts, utilities, private and public entities, businesses and incredible volunteers. The weed pull events are family-friendly and everyone is welcome to attend.

After the weed pulls, all volunteers are welcome to feast at the complimentary volunteer appreciation lunch, which is held in every participating community. The festivities include entertainment and great prizes.

No/low sugar jam workshop offered

If you are interested in reducing sugar in jams and jellies, there are several options for home food preservers. A “Making Low or No Sugar Jams and Jellies” class will be taught at the OSU Extension office in Redmond by Glenda Hyde, OSU Extension Service educator and master food preserver, on Tuesday, June 21, from 9 a.m. to noon.

During the class participants will learn about the selection and functions of ingredients. Then, the class will prepare jams and jellies with several different methods. Participants will then taste test for personal preference.

The cost of the class is $15 per person and can be paid that day. Register by calling the OSU Extension Service office in Redmond at 541-548-6088 or by e-mailing glenda.hyde@oregonstate.edu by Friday, June 17. Class size will be limited.

Redmond Area Park and Recreation District has many classes and activities for children and families to participate in this summer. Day hikes, Frisbee disk golf, a ropes course, sports camps, and a day at Lake Billy Chinook are just some of the offerings.

Sunriver Nature Center summer events

Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory offers a fun start to the summer for the whole family, and has special themed weeks for those wishing to explore more.
