Dinner theater brings 'mayhem’

The Children’s Theater Company has announced its first dinner theater production, “Mayhem in Mayville,” will show on Feb. 10, 11, 13, and 14 at 6 p.m.

Dinner will consist of roast pork loin (or vegetarian lasagna), rice pilaf, honey-glazed carrots, salad, drink and dessert.

When the lights come up on this two-act whodunit, the audience is aware that skullduggery has been at play – a pair of men’s legs are found sticking out from under a table at Connie’s Cup ’O Coffee Cafe. Mayhem quickly ensues and an investigation is under way. Everyone is suspect. Clues are found everywhere. The audience helps with the investigation and grand pandemonium follows as you try to make sense of all the clues and decide who the culprit is.

Central Oregon fabric artist show

The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) has partnered with Arts Central to host the first juried exhibit of art and contemporary quilts in Central Oregon. Fabrications – The Art of Quilting opens at Arts Central Friday, Feb. 3, and runs 5 to 8 p.m. to coincide with the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Bend.

The exhibit, sponsored by Bank of the Cascades, includes 33 art quilts, showcasing 24 different artists. “These may not be quilts like your grandmother made, but many of them were designed and created by grandmothers,” said Ann Richardson, executive director of SOQS, in a news release.

About one-third of the quilts will be for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting both Arts Central and SOQS, both of which are 501(c)(3) nonprofits. For Arts Central, proceeds will benefit its scholarship fund for youth in need. SOQS is known for its annual outdoor quilt show – the largest of its kind in the world. While educating the public about quilt making, the organization continues to carry out the American tradition of quilters, helping to meet community needs.

The annual show is on July 14, 2012.

The quilts will be on display until Feb. 25 at Arts Central, 875 N.W. Brooks St. in Bend. Arts Central is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Three artists from Redmond are featured in the exhibit: Mary Stiewig, Charlene Kenny and Tammy MacArthur. Sheila Finzer from Terrebonne is also featured.

Nature presentations series announced

The Deschutes Land Trust has announced its Winter Nature Nights series. Monthly presentations on nature-related topics will be given by experts in the field.

Feb. 21: Climate Change and Oregon – Building Resiliency, 7-8:30 p.m.

The earth’s climate is changing. How do we adapt to this new reality and prepare for the future? Join Kathie Dello, deputy director of the Oregon Climate Service, for a presentation on climate change and its impacts on Central Oregon and the state. Dello will discuss current and future changes to mountain snowpack, wildfire and vegetation. How might climate change affect our waters and our recreation? March 20: Three Sisters and Whychus Creek – A Geologic Past and Present, 7-8:30 p.m.

The Three Sisters, once known as Mount Multnomah, rank among the most diverse of Oregon’s volcanic centers because of their composition and past eruptions. They also harbor a high potential for future eruptions. Join Ellen Bishop Morris, noted geologist, author and photographer, for a talk on the geologic history of the Sisters and Whychus Creek. Ellen will discuss the geology of the Three Sisters region and the early volcanism revealed in Whychus Creek’s lower stretches. RSVP at www.deschuteslandtrust.org/events.

Learn about locally sourced cuisine

Central Oregon Locavore and Cascade Culinary Institute will hold a Meet Your Farmer Dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m, at the Cascade Culinary Institute Elevation Restaurant. The featured farmer will be Rainshadow Organics Farm of Lower Bridge and the featured menu will be “Rooters and Tubers.” Cost is $25 per person.

Central Oregon Locavore has been hosting the Meet Your Farmer Dinners over the past year at Common Table, a downtown Bend nonprofit restaurant, but had to change venues when the restaurant revamped its menu and programs.

Sarahlee Lawrence of Rainshadow Organics, a family run farm on 27 acres located just outside Terrebonne, will be at the event to talk about farming practices while diners will be treated to a meal made from seasonal ingredients.

Elevation’s Executive Chef and Chef Instructor Thor Erickson explained in a news release, “Rooters and Tubers : menu will be cured and cooked fresh pork and a selection of roasted root vegetables which are in season right now. The students preparing the meal will come away with a newfound sense of where things come from and how best to use it. Our goal is to educate culinary students on the procurement and use of sustainable local ingredients so this is a perfect partnership for us.”

Betty June Johns was born April 16, 1926, in Prineville, Ore., to Darrell and Besy Templeton.
Betty met and married Sherman W. Johns on Jan. 1, 1958. They lived in the Willamette Valley until the late 1970s when they moved to Central Oregon. Betty and Sherman loved to play bingo and go for drives together. Betty and Sherman were loved by all that knew them and will be missed.
Betty is survived by sons, Leonard (Leo) Johns, and Darrell Landon; daughters, Sharon Henderschmeyer, Tamesa (Tammy) Rohach, and Donna Kendall; and stepson, Sherman Lee Johns. She was predeceased by husband, Sherman in 2008, and stepdaughter, Beverly Johns.

Fundraiser for job skills mission

Get free tax preparation

Partnership to End Poverty (The Partnership) will once again offer free tax preparation clinics from Feb. 1 to April 15 across Central Oregon. Certified volunteers will help those who need assistance to electronically file both federal and state tax returns for free and, as eligible, claim tax refunds that benefit local families and the local economy.

The Partnership’s goals are to help Central Oregonians receive as much of a return as they deserve and to keep it for themselves. This includes the savings from the free preparation, increasing the number of people filing and receiving the Earn Income Tax Credit if they qualify, and limiting the number of people applying for high cost refund loan products.

Appointments for free tax preparation clinics are being taken for Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lynch Elementary in Redmond, through April 15.

Theater presents 'Angels of Lemnos’

Innovation Theatre Works in Bend has announced that the next production of its 2011-12 Balcony Café Season is the northwest premiere of Jim Henry’s “Angels of Lemnos.” Using an all-community cast, “Angels of Lemnos” tells a story of innocence, madness and the search for redemption played out against the backdrop of a homeless urban landscape in the dead of winter.

Directed by ITW’s Artistic Director Brad Hills, “Angels of Lemnos” features a cast of local actors including Clint Clark, recent star of ITW’s “The Santaland Diaries;” Liam O’Sruitheain, the ever present Studs Terkel from “Hard Times;” and Alastair Morley Jaques, best known for his annual portrayal of Edgar Alan Poe at the Old Stone Church. Also in the cast are Nancy Engebretson, Kelli Kirkman, Gena Osborne and Alan Maxim.

“Angels of Lemnos” will open on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a total of 11 performances through Saturday, Feb. 11. Ruth Evelyn Ward

A memorial service was held Jan. 11, at Stone Lodge Retirement Center,in Bend, Ore., for Ruth Evelyn Ward, previously of Bend, who passed away Jan. 4, at the age of 96.

She was born Sept. 28, 1915, in La Junta, Colorado, to Ralph and Anabel Healy Kinsman. She married Charles Ward on Dec. 12, 1989, in Bend.

Ruth was a wonderful mom and homemaker, and in the late 1950s she also ran her own bird hatchery in Portland, Ore. In the 1960s, she worked as a cosmetic clerk at Hiron’s Drugstore in Eugene, Ore.

Ruth excelled in whatever she put her mind to and always did it with a smile. She dearly loved her family.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; a son, James Burnett of Portland; two daughters, Patricia Edwards of Lorane and Barbara Isborn of Cottage Grove; stepdaughters Glenda Miller and Cindi Dunn of Bend, and stepson, Dan Ward of Bend; 24 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her former husbands, Frank Burnett, James Smith and "Dutch" Cody; granddaughter, Ginger Burnett and great-great-grandson, Peter Hefley.

Burial was Jan 9 at McCulloch Community Cemetery in Eugene .

Dollie Pauline Novotny McDaniel

Dollie McDaniel of Redmond, Oregon, died January 10, 2012, at the age of 89. She was born August 8, 1922, to Amil and Opal (Gillam) Novotny in Hay Springs, Nebraska. Dollie attended school and worked on the family farm in Nebraska. She and Luke Caffro moved to Oregon in 1948. She married George McDaniel after her first husband, Luke, died in 1970. She held a few jobs but was a devoted homemaker. Dollie loved to knit until her hands gave out; most everyone in the family has something she knitted.

Dollie was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1974, and a son, Donald Caffro in 2011. She is survived by a son, James Caffro and Donald's widow, daughter-in-law, Linda Caffro; grandchildren, Corrina, Donna, Louis, Marty, Mark, Robert and Kay; great-grandchildren, Aaron, Hunter, Faith, Jadon, Christena, Brian, Dakota, Bobby, Noelle, Cody, Garrett, Evan and Olivia.

KC Snider art show at Home Federal

KC Snider of Redmond will be showing her children’s book illustrations at the Home Federal Bank during the months of January and February. A reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13. Everyone is welcome.

Snider is an honors graduate from the School of Arts in Eugene where she majored in illustration. She was an art instructor for 17 years at both Lane and Linn Benton community colleges. Her fine arts career began in western fine art where she has won several prestigious western art awards like the Snaffle Bit and Pioneer awards.

In 2007, Snider had the opportunity to illustrate two children’s books for Guardian Angel Publishing, “The Christmas Angel” and “The Magic Violin.” They started her on her way toward a new career as an illustrator for Guardian Angel Publishing.

Snider lives in Redmond with her husband, Fred, who frames her work. Between her illustration contracts, she still manages to produce western art pieces and is working on a bronze.

Theater for young adults

Innovation Theatre Works has announced The Young Artists Theatre Conservatory (YATC) will hold a free workshop on Jan. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon.

YATC is the next step in professional theatrical training for the young adults (ages 15-21) of Central Oregon. Through a comprehensive trimester program YATC will provide a complete education in the theater arts punctuated with a progressive series of student productions.

The next two trimesters will take place January through June, beginning Jan. 21. YATC employs experienced and knowledgeable theatrical professionals to share their real-world skills with the young people of the region. There are a few spots remaining for the next two trimesters.

Each trimester will culminate with a production that will be stepped up in production value from minimal to full over the course of the year. However, the real emphasis will be on overall learning, with the productions serving only as demonstrations and evaluations of progress.

Tuition will be $180 per trimester and can be paid all at once or broken into three payments of $60 each. Students are also welcome to pay weekly ($15/week). Acceptance into YATC will include a commitment to a full trimester.

Learn to get some financial peace

Financial Peace University (FPU), the 13-week course taught by Dave Ramsey on DVD, will be held at Christian Church in Redmond, beginning Jan. 16 at 6 p.m

FPU teaches families and individuals common-sense principles like how to make a plan with their money so they are able to free themselves of debt and build lasting wealth. FPU is available for churches, military, nonprofit agencies, and businesses.

After each lesson there is a small group discussion that provides accountability and encouragement. Topics include saving for emergencies, budgeting, relationships and money, and getting out of debt.

Shakespeare 101 focuses on Hamlet

Innovation Theatre Works’ next session of Shakespeare 101 will focus on Hamlet. This unique 12-week workshop for ages 16 and up will focus on understanding Shakespeare’s language and learning basic performance techniques.

Led by Bend’s two leading Shakespearean actors and authorities, Liam O’Sruitheain and Alastair Jaques, this workshop will meet twice weekly over 12 consecutive weeks, culminating in two rehearsal-scale, one-hour open public rehearsals of selected sections of the play at Innovation Theatre Works.

The workshop will commence on Sunday evening, Feb. 12, and continue for the following 12 weeks through May 6. There will be two weekly sessions: Sunday and Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Open public rehearsal dates will be Monday, May 7, and Tuesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. Cost for the workshop is $200 plus a $25 text and materials fee.

In addition, Innovation Theatre Works will hold an introductory free workshop to give interested community members an opportunity to check it out. The free workshop will be held Sunday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Innovation Theatre Works.

Marian 'Vonny' Yvonne Fielder Mims

Jan. 10, 1937 - Jan. 6, 2012

On January 10, 1937, Marian Yvonne Fielder was born to Robert and Mary Fielder. Marian (or Vonny as she became known) was born and grew up in Prineville, Ore., with her brother, Robert Fielder and sister, Delores Fielder (McNamara).

After high school, she attended Portland State University, where she earned her teaching degree. Following college she met and married, Marcus Daniel Mims.

The two spent the remainder of their lives together. Along the way, she had a successful career teaching in California and the Bend School District. She also gave birth to two children, Marcus and Deirdre. At the time of her passing, Vonny had two special grandchildren who she loved very much.

Vonny held a love of children that was reflected not only in her own children but in the hundreds who passed through her first grade class at Bear Creek Elementary.

She enjoyed traveling and foreign cultures, traveling to

England

and

Finland

on an educational exchange program and vacationing throughout Europe. She and her family also hosted numerous exchange students from countries including

Australia

Finland

South Africa

Sweden

and

Belgium

After her retirement, Vonny spent several years dutifully caring for her ailing husband, followed closely by becoming caretaker for her mother. Shortly after Mary Fielder passed away, Vonny was diagnosed with dementia, which ultimately claimed her life. Vonny was fortunate to be surrounded by loving and loyal family and friends in her final years.

Throughout her struggle, Vonny's gentle, loyal and adventuresome nature was present - never lost was her love of nature, family, company and friends - and it is for this we pray that she shall be remembered.

Vonny was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus Daniel Mims in 2000; as well as her parents, Robert and Mary Fielder; and sister, Dolores McNamara.

Vonny is survived by her children, Marcus Mims, Deirdre Mims Kasberger and special daughter, Catherine Byrne; her daughter-in-law, Tina Drake; and son-in-law, John Kasberger; as well as her grandchildren, Benjamin and Ciline Kasberger; and her brother, Robert Fielder.

Betty Jean Johnson

Nov. 29, 1926 - Jan. 1, 2012

Betty Jean Johnson passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Jan. 1, 2012.

Betty was born in Bakersfield Calif., to Marion and Mabel Stevens. She attended school in Portland where she met her husband of 67 years, Charles Daniel. There they raised four children on a small farm and enjoyed many family and school activities. At a young age, Betty worked at the ship yards during World War II. Once her children were in school, she began her successful career as an insurance agent for John Hancock.

When Charles and Betty retired, they moved to "The Ranch" at Willowdale, there they enjoyed dancing, hunting and creating memories for their family and friends.

Charles and Betty then moved to The Greens in Redmond. Betty loved to watch the different birds visit her feeders and her canaries that sang to her through her final days. Betty's true passion was her family. She was a wonderful role model and homemaker, famous for her blackberry pie, always offering encouragement and loving words to her children, grandchildren, and anyone that was fortunate enough to be touched by her kindness. She provided a safe, stable and loving home, not only for her children, but for grandchildren and friends.

Betty is survived by her husband, Charles Daniel Johnson; her children, Steven (Teresa), John (Marie), Leanne, and Doug; her sisters, Marilyn Taylor and Ruthie Sharp; 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Dorothy, and a great-granddaughter, Alyson Betty-Jean Tittle.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Jim Manley for his help and support.

Billie A. Kroske died December 25, 2011, at her home at the age of 95. She was born May 16, 1916 in Green Bluff, WA to James and Helen (Farnam) Cannon. Billie grew up and graduated high school in Spokane, WA. She married Arthur Kroske on February 3, 1940, in Spokane, and in 1963, they moved to Redmond, OR. While living in Redmond they owned and operated Kroske Glass Shop in Bend and Redmond, they sold the stores in 1973 but Billie continued to work for the new owners until she retired.

Billie was a member of Redrock Squares square dancing club in Redmond, she also enjoyed golfing, sewing, painting and traveling. In June of 2011, she moved to Willow Creek Terrace Assisted Living in Heppner, Ore., to be closer to family.

She was survived by two sons, James and Gary; 10 grandchildren; 24 great- grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Kroske; a son, Michael; two sisters, Charlotte and Mary; and a half-brother, Pat Cannon.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Redmond Memorial Chapel. Donations may be made to Redmond Senior Center,

Holly Ann Greene Gordon

April 7, 1969 - Oct. 25 2011

Holly Ann Greene Gordon was 42 years old and a native of Central Oregon.

She was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, wife, nurse and who friend passed away peacefully on Oct. 25, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. She had been sick since December, 2010, and ultimately died of complication from her treatment.

Holly was born on April 7, 1969, in Portland, to Richard Greene and Colleen Connolly Greene. Besides her parents, Holly is survived by her three brothers, Brian, Jeffery, and Michael Greene and two sisters, Kelly Greene McAfee, Shelly Greene Malkin, and her husband, Richard Gordon and son, Evan Gordon.

Holly was preceded in death by both maternal grandparents, John and Rosella Connolly, and fraternal grandparents, Cordell and Mae Greene.

She attended St. Francis and Cloverdale grade schools and graduated from Redmond High School with the class of 1987. She was on the honor roll and lettered in basketball, volleyball and track. She was also active in 4-H and enjoyed riding and showing her horse, Carmel.

In 1990 she graduated from Central Oregon Community College as a registered nurse. Holly worked in the ER department at St. Charles in Redmond for over six years and was a member of the St. Charles family for twenty years. Holly will be remembered for her compassionate love for people, her zest for life, her faith in God and her courage and gracefulness during her battle with cancer. The Greene and Gordon family cordially thank each and every one of you for all for the benefits, food, flowers, visits, cards, and especially your prayers, hugs, love and support.

As Holly would say, we love all of you -- now, go enjoy the holidays in Holly's honor!!!!

Debra Ann Holmes

Debbie passed away after a life-long battle with breast cancer on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at the age of 54. Debbie leaves behind her husband of 28 years, Don; daughters Melissa and Sarah; son-in-law Andy; and grandson, Owen. Debbie was generous and full of love and touched the lives of many. She loved the summer warmth and spending time with family and friends. She had a great love for the beauty of the outdoors and enjoyed all animals, especially her little dog, Pinky.

Debbie will be forever remembered and missed for her immense compassion for others and amazing personality.

An intimate gathering of family and friends will hold a Celebration of Life in remembrance of Debbie.

Leonard Franklin Crabtree

March 19, 1934 - Dec. 18, 2011

Leonard was born in Jay, Oklahoma, on March 19, 1934. In 1953, he moved to Redmond, Oregon, where two of his sisters had lived for a while. Leonard started dating Loraine Dunbar in October of 1953 and seven months later they married on April 30, 1954. They have three children, six grandchildren, and 3-½ great-grandchildren. He loved and enjoyed them all so much. Leonard worked for seven years at the dicolite mine out of Terrebonne. He then went to work at the Redmond Mill for 36 years and retired in 1995.

Leonard enjoyed camping and fishing with his many loving relatives.

A memorial service was held Dec.21 at the Redmond Assembly of God Church. Interment was held at Redmond Memorial Cemetery. Autumn Funerals has been entrusted with arrangements.

Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ Leon Unger

April 20, 1920 - Dec. 16, 2011

Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ Leon Unger was born in Stickney, South Dakota, on April 20, 1920, to George and Kathryn (Chyma) Unger. He died on December 16, 2011, of old age at

his home. He was 91. He graduated from Yankton College in Yankton South Dakota.

He received his Doctorate in Medicine in 1945, from the University of Chicago Medical School. Dr. Unger served as a Captain in the US Army in Garmisch Germany in post World War II from 1946-1947. He completed his Internship and Residency at St. Vincent’s, Emanuel and Providence Hospitals in Portland, Oregon, in General Practice and Surgery. While at Providence Hospital he caught the eye of a young nurse, Pauline Hagenbach and they were married at All Saints Catholic Church in Portland, on October 8, 1949.

Bob and Pauline moved to Redmond, Oregon, and started his medical practice in November, 1949. In 1953, he was joined by Dr. Roger Stack and they build Cascade Medical Clinic, later joined by Dr’s Roger Ambroson, Steve Cross and Jim Detwiller.

He also was a member of Redmond Kiwanis, the Central Oregon Medical Association, St. Thomas Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Redmond Community Concert Association. He served on the Redmond School Board in the 60’s for ten years. He retired from medical practice in 1985, and during his practice he delivered over 2400 babies. He cared for many patients and was known for remembering their names and histories.

In 2001, he was the Grand Marshall for the Deschutes CO. Fair and Rodeo. He enjoyed gardening and liked to surprise family friends with a box of vegetables.

Dr. Unger is survived by his sister, Norma Jean Unger of Tigard OR; his five children, Alan and his wife, Bev of Redmond, Paul of Washington D.C. Anne Johnston of Salem, Fr. Todd and Craig of Redmond. His grandchildren, Robert and Alex Unger, Drew and his wife, Amy, Courtney, Zack andJohn Johnston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; his parents, George and Kathryn; his brother, Lloyd; and his son-in-law, Bryan Johnston.

A Rosary will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Redmond on Tuesday Dec. 20, at 6:00 p.m. A funeral Mass on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at noon, at St. Thomas followed by a reception at the Unger home.

Mildred Louise Hoffman

Mildred Louise Hoffman of Redmond, Oregon, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. She was 89.

A funeral service was held on Friday, December 16, 2011, at the Missionary Baptist Church in

Prineville, Oregon. She was later laid to rest at Juniper Haven Cemetery in Prineville.

Mildred was born July 2, 1922, in Adair County, Township of Morrow, near Novinger, Missouri, to Audra and Ella (Hills) Carnagey. In 1936, she, along with her family, moved to Prineville, Oregon. On March 27, 1949, Mildred married Alfred William Hoffman in Redmond, Oregon.

Mildred enjoyed sewing, reading and walking. She was also an active member of the Missionary Baptist Church of Redmond.

Survivors include her son, Frank (wife, Tina) Hoffman of Crescent, Oregon; and her daughter, Alice (husband, Mackey) Bishop, also of Crescent, Oregon. Other survivors include her sister, Wilma Cousins, of Mayer, Arizona; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Alfred Hoffman; her daughter, Dorothy Hoffman; two brothers, Wayne and Marvin Carnagey; and her sister, Maxine Clayton.

Purchase cookbook at benefit concert

Violinist George Shiolas, founder and musical director of the Lydon Ensemble, will perform two separate benefit concerts for Bend’s Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 17th.

Both showings take place at Bend’s Community Center, located at 1036 N.E. Fifth St. in Bend. The family matinee performance is from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors and $5 for children under 10. The evening performance runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $20 per person and includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres. A no-host bar will be available. This showing is for ages 21 and over.

Guests at either of these performances will be among the first to see and purchase the brand new “Sage in the Kitchen” cookbook. “Sage in the Kitchen” is a full-color cookbook featuring recipes from Central Oregon’s restaurants and chefs. All proceeds benefit the community center’s “Feed the Hungry” program, currently providing approximately 2,000 meals every week for the hungry and the homeless.

Sisters Folk Festival offers gift ideas

Sisters Folk Festival has announced a number of unique holiday gift ideas for the 2011 winter season. With memorable performances still fresh in people’s minds, SFF is offering 2012 passes through the winter months at a $20 discount. The All-Event Pass, usually $95, will be $75 for next year’s festival that will be held Sept. 7-9.

“We’ve had so many people excited about returning, we’ve decided to offer a holiday special again this year,” said Development Director Katy Yoder in a news release. “There’s no better stocking stuffer than the gift of live music,” she added.

The holiday special will be available through Dec. 31; all purchases prior to Dec. 15 will be mailed to buyers in time for Christmas. The festival will offer purchasers a signed 2012 festival poster as part of the purchase as well.

The festival celebrated its 16th anniversary this year, with performances by artists from all over the country and beyond. Festival organizers are working hard on booking acts for next year.

Keeping Sisters Country warm this winter will be the Sisters Folk Festival’s seventh annual Winter Concert Series. The lineup includes: Zydeco dance band Jeffrey Broussard & the Creole Cowboys on Jan. 23, festival fan favorite Martyn Joseph on Feb. 10, and female vocal trio Red Molly on March 10. Tickets are $15 per show for adults and $10 for students, or $40/$25 for the entire series. Tickets at the door will be $20 adult, $12 student.

Toy and clothing drive planned

Healthy Families of the High Desert, a local child abuse prevention program, is having a clothing and toy drive for high-risk, low-income families with children birth to age three. New, unwrapped educational toys for children birth to age three as well as new clothing for sizes birth to 4T are needed. The organization’s holiday wish list includes: building blocks, large wooden stringing beads, DUPLO blocks, stacking toys, soft dolls, refrigerator magnet sets, Fisher-Price toys (birth to age three), cloth books for infants, shape sorter, board books for infants, push/pull toys, rattles, wooden puzzles with knobs, musical first instruments. Diapers, formula, wipes and gas vouchers are also needed.

Recreation passes make great gifts

December is “stocking stuffer” month at Oregon State Parks. From Dec. 1-31, park goers can save $5 on the state park 12-month day-use parking permit. The state park permit, which is required at 26 Oregon state parks, is on sale for $25 – regularly $30 – in December.

Parking permits are transferable from vehicle to vehicle, making them even more of a value in today’s economy. OPRD also offers a 24-month pass, priced at $50.

Visitors who do not have long-term passes must purchase $5 daily permits.

The Oregon Coast Passport is also discounted $5 in December. The passport is a multi-agency product, valid at Oregon State Parks, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service sites along the Oregon Coast. The coastal passports are on sale for $30 – regularly $35 – in December.

The 12- and 24-month OPRD permits and coastal passports can be purchased, along with other gift possibilities such as gift certificates, by calling the Oregon State Parks Information Center at 1-800-551-6949. Callers may use debit or credit cards that have VISA or MasterCard logos to purchase permits, passports and gift certificates.

Walk-in customers can buy the OPRD permits at major OPRD offices, some state park friends’ group stores and selected local businesses throughout the state. A list of vendors is posted at www.oregonstateparks.org/dayuse_permit_vendors.php. The coastal passports are sold at coastal state parks, federal agency offices and local vendors in several coastal communities.

Parks and Rec winter offerings

Redmond Area Park and Recreation District offers Girls Youth Hoops, co-ed Tykes Hoops, and Cheerleading for Girls Youth Hoops, all with a Dec. 15 enrollment deadline.

Girls Youth Hoops, grades 3-8, and Cheerleading for Girls Youth Hoops, grades 1-8, play is Jan. 21 through Feb. 8. Tykes Hoops, grades 1-2, Kindergarten Tykes Hoops, age 5 by deadline, and Preschool Tykes Hoops, age 5 by deadline, play is Jan. 21 through Feb. 25.

Games are usually on Saturdays, with one or two practices during the week. Cost is from $45-$55. Registration for cheerleading includes a cheer shirt.

Snowshoe Basics at Edison Butte Sno-Park, an introduction to snowshoeing, will be taught for grades 5 to adult Saturday, Dec. 11, from noon to 2 p.m. Cost is $30.

Different types of gear and shoes will be discussed as the group starts on the groomed trails then heads off-trail for a backcountry adventure. Snowshoes are provided in cost of activity.

Middle School Sled and Snowshoe will be taught to grades 5-8 Sunday, Dec. 10, from noon to 4 p.m. Cost is $35.

The day begins with an introduction to snowshoeing and exploring the groomed trails, and then moves into a backcountry adventure to the main park. Bring your own sled; snowshoes are provided in cost of activity. Transportation is provided from the RAPRD Activity Center.

Harley Jack James Clelland (Tank Tank), 2, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2011. He was born in Salem, Oregon, on April 5, 2009, to parents Misty Leann Williams and Marvin Clelland.

Tank Tank was a wonderful little boy with big blue eyes and blonde hair. He always had a great attitude and beaming smile. He enjoyed playing with his sister, Natalia; and brothers, Breiton (Pickles), John Jr. and Joey. He also enjoyed playing with toys and loving on his family.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Joseph Shinn; and great-grandparents, William (Bill) and Melva (Sue) Williams of Redmond.

He is survived by his mother and father (above) and adoptive parents, John and Crystal Downing; sister, Natalia Williams; and brothers, Breiton, John and Joey Downing, great-grandmother, Patricia Shinn; grandparents, Dale and Beckysue Williams of Salem, Craig and Bernie Downing of Redmond and Felix and Sherlyn Ornelas of Woodburn.

The world got a little dimmer on Wednesday, but Heaven got a great deal brighter. You will be dearly missed Tank Tank, we all love you dearly.

Lions Clubs set up gift trees

The Lions Clubs in Bend and Redmond have gift giving trees ready for community donations to serve less fortunate children this Christmas.

If you know of a child in need, go to Big Country RV and fill out a Lions’ gift request tag. The tags will describe the children and their gift requests. The Lions gift giving trees are located at both Big Country RV stores, in Bend on Highway 97 across from Home Depot and in Redmond on Highway 97 next to the Dollar Store.

Those who want to donate a gift select a tag off of the Lions gift giving trees, purchase the gift, wrap it and return it to the tree before Dec. 20. Checker Cab Company in Bend and Redmond will deliver the gifts.

The Lions and Meals on Wheels will also have a special gift-giving tree at the same Big Country RV stores to remember seniors and give them holiday joy this season. Cash donations are also appreciated and the Lions Club will do the shopping.

Drop off canned food at the library

Redmond Public Library is serving as a drop-off location for the St. Vincent de Paul food bank. Donations of nonperishable food will be accepted through Dec. 31, during regular library hours.

Susan Annette Bozarth

Susan Annette Bozarth, age 67, died as a result of Lewy Body Disease on Friday, November 25, 2011, in Redmond, OR.

Susan was born on April 3, 1944, in McMinnville, Ore., the first child of David and Evelyn Brown. She had three siblings, Christian, David, and Dana Brown.

The family moved to Redmond during Susan’s high school years. In 1963, she married James F. Bozarth. They raised a family, too many animals to count, and grew beautiful gardens.

Susan worked for the Redmond School District as a school secretary at Tumalo Elementary School.

Upon retirement, Susan and Jim moved to Mapleton, Ore., where they were able to garden by the Siuslaw River to their heart’s content. Susan and Jim returned to Redmond in 2010.

Always active and busy, Susan was involved in gardening, reading, raising animals, going on day trips, cooking, making her home beautiful, flower arranging for celebrations and events, and working toward preventing overdevelopment of scenic lands such as Smith Rocks State Park. She was especially fond of fostering stray animals, getting them healthy, and finding them suitable new homes.

She could not help but be a mother or a friend to anyone who seemed to need one, and she usually did so with a generous amount of humor and positive outlook. Susan took great joy in her life.

Susan is survived by her husband, James Bozarth; her children, Frances Bozarth, Rebecca Bozarth, Michael Bozarth, Tim McKenzie; her daughter- in-law, Mary McKenzie; and her son-in-law, Jim Miller; grandchildren Sam Stillwell, Savannah Stillwell, Ike McKenzie and Molly McKenzie; her mother, Evelyn Brown; her brothers, Christian Brown, David Brown; sister, Dana Brown and their families; and her many dear friends.

A memorial/life celebration for Susan, will take place Dec. 4, from 1-4 p.m., at the Becky Johnson Center,

Donald Wayne Reding

Donald passed away Tuesday evening from heart and lung disease at home with his loving wife and daughter at his side.

Don was born in Tacoma, Wash., to Leo and Elizabeth (Curtis) Reding.

Don grew up in the Tigard, Ore., area, graduating in 1944 from Tigard High School. He went directly from graduation to San Diego and the Navy. He was a US Navy seaman in the Asian war area 1944-1946.

He married Maxine Hickey in 1949, and was blessed with sons, Jerry and Bobby, and daughter, Donna.

Don worked for Safeway Stores from 1947 to 1984. He was the store manager in Redmond, Ore., 1959 to 1969. He was active in the community and enjoyed being a volunteer ambulance driver and fireman.

Don married Diana (Aeschliman) Westfall, Dec. 2, 1978, at the MGM Grand Hotel in Reno, Nevada. He helped raise Diana’s two sons, Derek and Daniel Westfall.

He retired in 1984, and returned to Redmond with Diana, who was born and raised in Bend, Ore.

His favorite activities were family, friends, cooking, gardening, woodworking, and in later years, the computer and crossword puzzles.

In lieu of flowers or remembrances, Don asked for donations to the Redmond-Sisters Hospice.

No services are planned.

Don was a loving person who loved life, people and his cats, Hairee and Lillee. He will be dearly missed by all.

Library offers religion series

The Pope, a Rabbi and Buddhist monk walk into a coffee shop. What would they talk about? Do they have anything in common? Deschutes Public Library offers the opportunity to explore these and other questions during the Know Religion series during the month of December.

From Hindu art to the foundation of Buddhist thought, local experts will explore a wide range of religious beliefs and practices. All programs are free and open to the public.

Jesus and the Early Christians Outside of the Bible: The primary source for the life of Jesus is the Bible, yet other ancient authors wrote about him as well.

Holiday art will be on display

High Desert Society of the Arts is sponsoring a Christmas Show of local artists’ work at Home Federal Bank in Redmond throughout the month of December.

Nine artists will show their versions of Christmas: Carol Armstrong, Jeff Freeman, Sue Gomen Honnell, Carol Jacquet, Linda Shelton, KC Snider, Kathy Whiteaker, Judi Williamson, and Jim Woltering.

An artist reception will be held Friday, Dec. 9, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. All art will be available for sale.

Art at the library

The Friends of the Redmond Library Art Committee is hosting the Winter 2011 Open Art Show, through Dec. 30. Central Oregon artists will be showing original artwork created in a variety of mediums including watercolor, photography, oils and pastels.

The majority of the artwork will be for sale with 20 percent of the proceeds going to the Friends of the Library who support the Art Committee and art exhibits at the library.

The Friends of the Redmond Library Art Committee is sponsoring the Winter 2012 Photography Exhibit, Jan. 7 through Feb. 25 at the Redmond Public Library, and Central Oregon photographers are invited to submit original and ready-to-hang artwork.

Art will be reviewed and selected by Art Committee members.

The library display area will support up to 50 works. All artists are responsible for dropping off their submissions on Jan. 7 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and picking up their own artwork at the end of the exhibition on Feb. 25 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. No storage is available for artwork.

Clothing drive under way

Windermere/Central Oregon Real Estate offices in Bend and Redmond are hosting their annual “Share the Warmth” donation drive now through Dec. 31. Community members are invited to take part and help their neighbors in need.

In Redmond, the Windermere office is collecting winter clothing and coats of all sizes for kids and adults, as well as gloves, scarves, hats and blankets.

Items should be new or gently used and laundered. The Family Access Network will distribute the items to the less fortunate in the Redmond area. Community members can bring donations to:

Windermere, 1020 S.W. Indian Ave., Suite 100; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Theatre offers Shakespeare workshops

Innovation Theatre Works Artistic Director Brad Hills has announced that the next session of Shakespeare 101 will focus on one of Shakespeare’s greatest masterpieces, “Hamlet.”

This unique 12-week workshop for ages 16 and over will focus on understanding Shakespeare’s language and learning basic performance techniques. Led by Bend’s two leading Shakespearean actors and authorities, Liam O’Sruitheain and Alastair Jaques, this workshop will meet twice weekly over 12 consecutive weeks, culminating in two rehearsal-scale, one-hour open public rehearsals of selected sections of the play at ITW.

Cost for the workshop is $200 plus a $25 text and materials fee.

In addition, ITW will hold a free introductory workshop to give interested community members an opportunity to check it out. The free workshop will be held Sunday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. at ITW.

Lenora Faye ‘Hoot’ Holt

Lenora Faye "Hoot" Holt was born Lenora Demaris in Barnes, Oregon, a place nonexistent now but to our family and our memories. Her birth certificate states, "in country 57 miles SE of Prineville."

Her parents are Bert Demaris and Maggie Lee (Birdsong) Demaris. She had seven brothers and sisters: Beulah Demaris Becker, Warren Demaris, Albert John Demaris, Alta Demaris Neel, Edna Belle Demaris Bedwell, and Leona Demaris Davis.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, George "Earl"; son, Donald Watrous of Mission Viejo, Calif.; daughter, Valerie Lytle of Redmond; son, Edward Albert Holt of Burns, Ore.; grandson, Ryan Watrous and family near Phoenix, Ariz.; granddaughter, Kelly Partin-Yi and family currently working in Channai, India;and granddaughters, Jessica Berry and Chelsi Holt of Burns, Ore.

Lenora was a real estate broker in Central Oregon for the past 20-plus years. She could be seen delivering flyers to her local listings, playing pinochle at the Redmond Senior Center and the Grange Hall, or eating breakfast almost every morning at Shari's restaurant in Redmond.

Services were held Nov. 22, 2011 at Redmond Memorial Chapel. A potluck followed at the Redmond Senior Center.

In the opinion of Evan Hagan, folk singers in the early decades of the 20th century were the original punks; their music was anti-establishment and angry.

He can relate. The high school senior has been drawn to punk music for years, playing guitar in a band, The Knuckle Children, since middle school.

“There were no posers back then,” says Hagan, who plays guitar in the Depression-era play “The Grapes of Wrath” at Redmond High School this week. “These people really were starving artists. I have enormous respect for them.”

Hagan, and fellow Knuckle Children band member Josh Agee, are part of an unusual musician-actor-Greek chorus group of teens who perform in “Wrath.” They call themselves The Grape Pickers.

Hagan plays Grandpa Joad, patriarch of a family of Dust Bowl refugees trying to find a better life in California, which they’ve been assured is a land of plenty.

The rest of the musicians, Gatlin Cyrus on fiddle, Mandi Kuhlman on vocals, Lili Wagner on vocals and harmonica, Phil Aulie on mandolin, Una Wagner on vocals and washboard, Dallas Husky on vocals and Agee on guitar, have bit parts in the play in addition to the songs performed during set transitions and the play’s two acts.

Two of the musicians are children of Wrath director Hilda Beltran and most of the rest were recruited directly by her. Beltran’s husband, Judd Wagner, is a Redmond School District teacher who has headed a student roots-music program, The Americana Project, for many years.

All the students agreed: Beltran knows how to sniff out good musicians.

“I don’t know how she found out I play mandolin but she did,” Aulie shakes his head ruefully. The senior started out playing violin several years ago but discovered the mandolin and has not gone back.

“I learned to play jigs when I was younger but I can’t say I’m really a fan (of old-time folk music), but when Beltran asked me I thought 'Why not?’”

None of the four boys admits to being big bluegrass or folk fans but Ag ee and Hagan are fans of the Redmond group Larry & His Flask, which in recent years has transitioned from old-school punk music to a more roots-Celtic blend – with a punkish twist.

Cyrus has the most training in the style of music used in Wrath, having studied fiddle for years with teacher Brandon Booher, and has played country and Irish music. He says he likes playing anything that gets your feet tapping.

“I wasn’t really a fan of this music before but it’s everywhere in Central Oregon and I’ve come to appreciate the freedom of it, how it has so much more to say,” says Hagan.

Nutcracker play on stage in Bend

Bend Experimental Art Theatre’s holiday production is “The Story of the Nutcracker.”

The play is a unique dramatization, adapted by Michele Vacca from “The Tales of Hoffman,” the Dumas story and the Tchaikovsky ballet scenario, and brings the stage alive with traditional Nutcracker characters.

With visions of sugar plums dancing on stage, all the creatures are stirring throughout “The Story of the Nutcracker,” set to the dreamy music of Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky.

The cast portrays more than 30 characters in this lively and enchanting production, as the children, Fritz and Marie, are visited by Uncle Drosselmeyer, who brings three very special dolls for their Christmas presents.

Performances take place at 2nd Street Theater, Dec. 1-3 and Dec. 8-10 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 11 at 3 p.m.

Holiday-themed theater offerings

Innovation Theatre Works presents David Sedaris’ “The Santaland Diaries,” running Nov. 25 through Dec. 22 in the Balcony Café, 1155 S.W Division St., in Bend.

Community theater auditions planned

Innovation Theatre Works in Bend has announced auditions for Dec. 4 and Dec. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. Actors may call or email to schedule an audition time and may prepare a monologue or cold read from materials provided at the audition. Sides will be available at the theater during the week leading up to the audition. All members of the community are invited to audition.

Casting requirements for “The Angels of Lemnos” by Jim Henry and directed by Brad Hills are a man in his late 20s and a man in his 50s. The Forms, who play all other roles in the play and provide atmosphere when needed, require three women and two men of any adult age. “The Angels of Lemnos” will rehearse from mid-December through January and is scheduled to open in late January.

“Mr. Marmalade” by Noah Haidle and directed by Sandy Silver requires an adult to play a child, Lucy, with a vivid imagination (age 20-30), an imaginary friend Mr. Marmalade (age 25-35), Lucy’s mom (age 25-35), the babysitter (age 15-21), the babysitter’s boyfriend (age 15-21), an adult to play a child, Larry (age 20-30), and Mr. Marmalade’s personal assistant (any age). Mr. Marmalade will rehearse February through March and is scheduled to open in mid-March.

Ann Hanson

Nov. 16, 1915 - Nov. 8, 2011

Ann passed away in Redmond, on November 8, 2011.

She was born November 16, 1915, in Amidon, North Dakota, to Clemens and Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Koffler. She moved to Creswell, Oregon, when she was 21 years old where she met Osy Hanson. Ann and Osy were married December 2, 1939, in Vancouver, Washington. They were married for 68 years until Osy's passing.

In 1947, Osy and Ann moved to Redmond. They soon settled in the Pleasant Ridge area and established Hanson's Dairy. They sold the farm to son Steve, in 1973.

In earlier years Ann was involved in home extension and farm bureau and was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Redmond. She was a 4-H cooking and baking leader for years.

She loved gardening, neighborhood pinochle card parties and dancing with her husband, Osy. Her greatest gift was her wonderful cooking and baking skills. She loved making German and Norwegian dishes with her sisters and later with her friends, children and grandchildren.

Ann is survived by her five children, sons, Rod (Sandi) of Terrebonne, Steve (Linda) and Dave (Diane) both of Bend; daughters, Arlene (Vern) Michaels of Prineville and Carol (Bob) Downs of Terrebonne; 18 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Osy; her parents, her brothers and sisters and infant son, Lyle.

A rosary was held November 13, with a celebration of life that Nov. 14 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Redmond.

Joseph William Pickens

July 15, 1957 - Nov. 7, 2011

Joseph William Pickens was born on July 15, 1957, in Bend, Oregon. He passed away on November 7, 2011, in the Hells Canyon Wilderness area while participating in one of his favorite activities, hunting elk with his brother Gilbert Pickens Jr.

Mr. Pickens is survived by his wife of 26 years, Manuela Judith Benitez de Pickens; his three children, Jessica Prescher, 25, Kevin Pickens, 23, Lynn Auroa Pickens, 15. In addition, he is survived by his three brothers, Gilbert Pickens Jr., Michael Pickens and Christopher Pickens.

Mr. Pickens was employed at the Oregon Department of Human Services Child Welfare for 23 years, where he helped spearhead the fight against child abuse in Central Oregon.

Mr. Pickens was a lifetime resident of Central Oregon where he graduated from Gilchrist High School in 1975. He went to college at the Graduate Theological Union where he earned a degree in Theology.

He was an active member of the Catholic Church where he served as an Ordained Deacon. He was the most committed family man and avid outdoorsman.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Alice Pickens; his father, Gilbert Pickens Sr.; his sisters, Rosaleen Ashburn and Kathleen Pickens.

Joseph Pickens funeral service was held on Nov. 12 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Redmond, Oregon. A Rosary was held Nov. 11 at St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Alex McMillan

Aug. 16, 1925 - Nov. 11, 2011

Alex grew up in Arcata, Calif., area. In 1942, Alex entered the Navy at 17, and was a boatswains mate in a fleet of 26 "tin can" Ddstroyers in the Pacific Theater in WWII. Only six of his fleet returned from their tour of duty.

Alex returned from active duty in the Navy in 1945.

In 1947, he married Barbara June Boyd of Eureka, Calif., The couple had two children, Linda Alyce and Gary Hugh. Alex later married Alma (Punky) Van Meter.

Alex was a self-employed heavy construction trucker in Southern California, Vista area for over 20 years.

Following Alma's passing he met Marion Farry of Bend, Ore. The couple enjoyed extensive RVing and travel abroad, until her passing 8 years later.

Alex was a current member of the Moose Lodge fraternal organization.

Alex known as Mac, to all his friends, is survived by daughter, Linda Milhous (Douglas); son, Gary McMillan (Kim); sister, Mary Wright (Jeff); three grandchildren, Kaylan Redwood, Nathan and Daniel Milhous.

Eleven. One short of a dozen, half of the lucky 7-11 in roulette, the number of players on a football team, the atomic number of sodium, the time shown on clocks depicted on Canadian currency, the number of space-time dimensions in M-theory.

And for one Redmond girl, 11 adds up to a special day.

Emily Osborne turns 11 on Friday, which wouldn’t draw much notice, except that this year her birthday is on 11-11-11 — and she was born at 11 p.m

That’s a lot of 11s.

It wasn’t until her 10th birthday that her dad figured out the special nature of her 11th birthday, explained Emily, a fifth-grader at Tom McCall Elementary.

Emily’s birth at 11 p.m. on Nov. 11, 2000, didn’t ring any bells, confirmed mom Tracey Osborne. The family’s only thought at the time was that having a birthday on Veterans Day would be special because there would be no school.

Now it’s turned into a unique event, Tracey Osborne said.

How will Emily celebrate?

On the big day, she’ll do something special each hour for 11 hours, Emily explained. But just what, she hadn’t figured out in the week before her special day — though, she added, some things will be a surprise and others she will choose.

The soon-to-be 11-year-old has well-rounded interests. Her favorite school subject is science in general, but she has identified a specific scientific field as a possible future career – lepidopterology, the study of butterflies and moths.

“They’re really pretty and they’re really interesting to me,” she said.

Outside school, Emily participates in ballet and sometimes does crafts with her mom.

Currently, she’s rehearsing for a church play where she’ll portray an apple vendor.

Operation Christmas Child is under way

While many Redmond families are busy with holiday activities, a group of local volunteers is focused on filling empty shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, hygiene items and notes of encouragement for needy kids overseas. Redmond families are participating in the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind — Operation Christmas Child — an effort that has hand-delivered 86 million gifts to kids worldwide since 1993.

This year-round effort — a project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse — is coming to its peak, as local businesses, churches and schools prepare to collect gift-filled shoe boxes during National Collection Week, Nov. 14-21.

Participants can drop off their shoe box gifts at Word of Victory Church, 645 S.E. Salmon Ave., in Redmond, at the following times: Monday, 10 a.m.-noon and 3-7 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday, Friday and Sunday, 3-7 p.m.

Tracking technology allows donors to “follow” their box to the destination country where it will be hand-delivered to a child in need. Kids can dance their way to fitness

Children ages 6-12 can enjoy Dance Fitness classes at the Redmond Area Park and Recreation District Activity Center on Fridays.

Kids will learn basic dance steps that emphasize the importance of movement in fitness and overall health using styles from hip-hop through pre-choreographed movement as well as developing their own unique style during freestyle time. The music is clean, and the dance moves are athletic, age-appropriate and gender-neutral.

Comic art on display

Through the month of November, the Friends of the Redmond Library Art Committee will feature the work of Bryan E. Warner in the Silent Reading Area at the Redmond Public Library.

Warner’s show features four panels of illustrations in the “Frank Zombie P.I.” comic book. The panels include prints of the pencil art, text, and a finished hand-lettered and colored print.

A drawing for the four individual panels will be held at the end of November. You need not be present to win.

4-H program plans rummage sale

The Deschutes County 4-H program, a local nonprofit, is planning its annual rummage and tack sale, and a craft fair. All funds raised will be used to maintain current local 4-H programming levels.

Clean out your garage of all those unwanted but useable items and donate them, or purchase a booth to sell your own homemade or craft items. Crafters pay $30; commercial vendors, $50 for an 8 x 10 booth space.

Ski event to benefit local schools

The seventh annual Mt. Bachelor Ski for Schools fundraiser to benefit the Education Foundations for Bend-La Pine and Redmond Schools will run from Nov. 28 to Dec. 2.

For 65 years Central Oregonians have celebrated autumn’s zenith with Lord’s Acre Day, an annual harvest-timed event hosted by Powell Butte Church.

Begun in the post-WWII days of austerity and careful spending, Lord’s Acre was conceived as a way to raise badly-needed funds for a new church building. The idea, borrowed from African-American churches in the South that encouraged farmers to donate proceeds from one acre’s yield, proved successful.

In 1948, the event’s third year, $3,500 was raised from the sale of donated alfalfa, wheat, hogs, calves, geese and chickens, as well as handmade quilts, pies and a barbecue lunch.

Fifty-three years later, in 2001, the event raised $61,000.

The event gained momentum through the years, bringing back former residents and becoming the campaign stop of choice for politicians. Funds are used for church building needs, scholarships and mission work.

This year patrons will find much of the same offerings, from homemade baked goods to whole-hog sausage to canned pickles to quilts and firewood.

Eight years ago, Lord’s Acre added a 10K run and 5K run/walk to the mix; other traditions, such as the auction and pit barbecue, continue.

Lord’s Acre timeline

1948: Celebrity attendee is Senator Wayne Morse; barbecue served 650 (so many, in fact, that it was quickly decided to add a second serving line in 1949).

1951: Donations for sale included a gelding and many tables of “fancy work” handcrafts; a 470-pound steer (donated by rancher Earl Thompson) was barbecued and it fed 700 diners. Proceeds topped $5,000.

1959: More than 2,000 were served at the barbecue; Sen. John F. Kennedy, stumping for the presidential nomination, attended with his wife, Jackie, but the Spokesman’s coverage of the event was mostly about the dozens of former area residents who returned for the event.

1962: Thanks to Lord’s Acre proceeds, the church was debt-free; six lines are needed to feed the barbecue patrons; organ music is provided in the sanctuary for weary visitors needing peace and quiet from the hullabaloo; Gov. Mark Hatfield sent regrets (but he did attend the previous year); $7,231 netted.

1971: Buses of seniors are brought in from the Willamette Valley; Oregon Secretary of State Clay Meyers attends; $10,500 in proceeds.

1980: Dave Frohnmeyer, candidate for Oregon Attorney General, attends; 800 pies sold.

1983: $26,250 in proceeds.

1995: More than 1,850 served at the barbecue; 3,400 pounds of fresh sausage is sold out in 90 minutes; $40,000 netted.

2001: Proceeds top $61,000.

2002: Church officials announce the need for a building expansion to serve the growing congregation.

2010: More than 1,200 cinnamon rolls sold; 1,000 gallons of beans cooked for the barbecue.

Volleyball Camp and Youth Volleyball League start this month at the RAPRD Activity Center. Both are for grades three through five.

The volleyball camp is three days and a way to learn the basics while deciding if volleyball is for you. Participants learn the proper techniques to bump, set, spike and serve in a fun environment. This camp will be held Nov. 21-23.

The Youth Volleyball League will emphasize instructional learning of basic skills, sportsmanship, team work and fun. Shirts are provided; participants are required to wear protective knee pads and teams will use a “volley-lite” ball. The league will run Nov. 21 to Dec. 17.

Pee Wee Hoops, for ages 3 to 5, will be offered at the RAPRD Activity Center on Mondays, Nov. 7, 14, and 21, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Learn to catch, dribble and shoot a basketball. Positive attitude and fun are emphasized in this hoops class. Cost is $15.

Explore the sport of scuba diving

This one-day class for ages 10 and over provides participants both land and water-based training. It includes an introduction to scuba gear, information about basic safety and the chance to don gear and get in the water.

Library expands Civil War collection

A $3,000 grant from the American Library Association (ALA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will allow the Deschutes Public Library to host “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War,” a five-part reading and discussion series. The library is one of 65 public libraries nationwide receiving grants to host the series which will encourage participants to consider the legacy of the Civil War and emancipation. The series kicks off in January and concludes in March.

“The Civil War takes us back to a time in American history when civility ruptured and the nation split in two,” said Jim Leach, chairman of NEH, in a news release. “The sesquicentennial of the Civil War and emancipation is an occasion for America to reflect together about the causes and ramifications of our greatest internal conflict, and a most appropriate way for 'us the living’ to renew the American spirit in these still-troubled times.”

In addition to program funding, the library will receive copies of the following works: “March” by Geraldine Brooks (Penguin, 2006); “Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam” by James McPherson (Oxford University Press, 2002); “America’s War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversaries,” a forthcoming anthology of historical fiction, speeches, diaries, memoirs, biography, and short stories, edited by national project scholar Edward L. Ayers and co-published by NEH and ALA.

Annemarie Hamlin will lead the series book discussions. Hamlin, an assistant professor at Central Oregon Community College, teaches writing and literature. She holds a PhD in literature from the Claremont Graduate School and taught for more than 10 years at La Sierra University in Riverside, Calif., before moving to Bend in 2007.
